How will implication of GST bill be effective for the economy?
GST stands for Goods and Services Tax which aims to make India a uniform market is certainly a crucial step undertaken by the government. Its effective implication can benefit the citizens in varied ways. It was devastating for people to pay tax on almost everything they purchase for themselves.
How do you feel when you to watch a movie at your nearby multiplex and end up spending more than the ticket prices due to ‘entertainment tax’? How do you feel when you dine out in a five star restaurant with your family members and then pay a vast amount including ‘VAT’ and ‘service tax’? Not good…Right? It is obvious no one would prefer to bear the extra expenditures officially termed as ‘indirect taxes’ every time. Keeping this fact in consideration the government has come with the planning of GST bill to dissolve different types of taxes and merge them into a sole taxation system.
So how GST bill got passed?
- It came into the scene amid 2007 to 2008 budget session.
- On 17th December 2014, the idea gets consent by the Union Cabinet Ministry.
- On 19th December, 2014, the bill was announced at LokSabha.
- On 3rd August 2016, the bill finally gets passed by the RajyaSabha.
Now let us see how GST is enforced:
- As it works on the ‘Destination principle’,it is being charged at the landing place.
- At each of every stage of the sale or purchase during the transit process GST is accumulated on value added goods and services.
- Primarily the manufacturer or retailers need to pay the required tax but can demand it later through tax credit system.
- Those who are the last persons in the supply process are liable to pay the tax as GST is to be collected at the end point.
Though like the forms indirect taxes, GST is bearded by the end customers but the way it differs from the other ones is that it costs much lesser due to the eradication of double charging.
GST can be broadly categorized into two sections. They are:
- Central Goods and Service Tax (CGST): It comprises of current taxes like custom duty, excise duties, service tax, etc.
- State Goods and Service Tax (SGST):It comprises of taxes like VAT, entertainment taxes, sales taxes, etc.
As nothing is perfect, GST too comes with certain flaws but the features associated it definitely makes it a worth for the progress of nation.
